Since 2000 a stable team of artists have been working for zeitraumexit, creating a programme aiming to present both visual and performing arts such as: live art, performance art, screen, installation, drawing, photography, and dance – the spectrum is broadly interpreted.
The Institution...
During the past ten years, zeitraumexit has been able to establish its reputation as a centre for exhibitions, productions and guest performances both nationally and internationally. Due to its open-mindedness for all forms of media and its particular interest in projects that go beyond convention, zeitraumexit has acquired a special position in the scope of institutions specialising on performance and contemporary art. zeitraumexit’s programme contains neither mainstream nor theatre projects that solely lead to productions based on the authors’ text: zeitraumexit strictly focuses on pure and unconventional art.
...in dialog
The programme frequently varies between different genres, thus defying the conventionalism of standard assignments. In the scope of film, screen, performance, installation and even hybrid forms of art, artists take the liberty of choosing the one medium most suitable for their aspiration. Within the interaction of curators and artists, situations may occur where zeitraumexit liberates plays from their original genre in order to implement a new and unorthodox approach. zeitraumexit’s comic exhibitions, for example, contained various works the artists had never associated with the standard genre.
...as an organism
In the sense of an event location, the team of zeitraumexit does not describe its form of work as a service but rather as a direct involvement with the term art: every annual schedule, festival and exhibition is based on an intense and diverse examination concerning the upcoming topics. In Mannheim zeitraumexit creates one of the few artistic places in Germany that promote the eagerness for experimentation, thereby merging the gap between visual and performing arts. Places like this are more often becoming the centre of development and perception for innovative forms of artistic expression – places that shape the future of performance art. zeitraumexit is a pioneer for arts that are not yet canonised and difficult to classify, partly due to a lack of suitable vocabulary.
Administration
The Programme’s composition is also influenced by the experience of the artistic directors, whose personal artistic work ensures an intuitive approach towards different forms of art:
- Gabriele Oßwald (performing arts, installation/drawing)
- Wolfgang Sautermeister (performing art, drawing/painting, Kunstvermittlung)
- Tilo Schwarz (drawing/installation, stage design)
The institution acquires its funding mostly from private sources. Even though zeitraumexit is receiving a fixed amount of funds from the budget of the city of Mannheim and its cultural office in 2010 and 2011, these funds only account for about 20 percent of the overall budget. The rest of the budget is asquired from sources such as private donations, sponsors, lettings, current receipts from events and financial contributions of the associations’ passive members.
